Charlie Wilson's War
I watched this with Deb last night. Apparently it would be more entertaining if I didn't say "oh come on, THAT'S FUNNY!" quite so many times during the movie.
I'd give it 4/5 stinger missiles... good, old fashioned, Cold War based entertainment.

I watched this movie with my little sister and her boyfriend. I think I ruined the movie for them when I started to make comments about how the actions of the US during this war ultimately led to the creation of al Queda. I've watched a lot of movies in my life and if I've learned one thing from them it's this: Just because someone say's it's good, doesn't mean you should watch it. Find out what it's about first and then figure out if you would be interested in the subject matter.
granted...
Since it's history now I won't worry about ruining the ending of the movie for anyone, but the final thing you see on the screen before the credits run is
"These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the endgame. " (note to Ken: maybe this IS that kind of site?)
Between that, the story about the Zen master from Phillip Seymore Hoffman's character and basically PSH's last scene and statements in the movie I felt like it was pretty clear that the film makers were agreeing with Joe wholeheartedly. It came a little late in the movie, and maybe should have gone into more detail about how the US financed/armed/trained Mujahideen eventually became the Taliban/al-Queda, but for me the slap in the face that WAS the end of the movie was enough for me.
So here's the question Joe. Did you like the movie?
I will say that I enjoyed the movie, but I had mixed emotions about it also. Given what is happening in the world right now I wasn't sure if we were supposed to be celebrating Charlie's actions or condeming them.
Agreed...
They definitely make it seem like Charlie is doing the right thing (and in the end Congress just won't let him continue doing the right thing), but an interesting question is what MIGHT have happened if the US has stuck with the other proposed plan (by the station chief who Gust claims is going to get us all killed). Unfortunately all we can say for certain was the complete strategy of the US (including the endgame) was a big mistake.
